About Radio Horyaal
Radio Horyaal was created by the Diaspora Somaliland community always eager to contribute positively to their country’s transition towards democracy. Its primary goal is to be a vehicle to educate the community about democracy is and how to positively and peacefully take part in elections to choose the right candidates to represent them in all levels of the government.
It was only May 18, 1991 when Somaliland communities gathered about the future of their country and decided to reclaim their sovereignty withdrawing from the disastrous union with former Italian colony of Somalia. On that day, the Capital city Hargeisa was in total ruins and full of land mines left behind by the retreating former dictator’s army. The help of the Diaspora community proved instrumental in resurrecting the country from the ashes and its navigation out of the chaos that engulfed the region that still remains mired in conflict. With virtually no help from the international community (with the notable exception of the assistance towards the democratic institutions from EU and UK), the country has setup a functioning government followed by a series of elections to prove to the international community that this country deserves recognition.
However, its fledgling democracy has faced threats from both inside and abroad. Some of the fundamentalist organizations in neighboring Somalia were linked to the attacks that were targeted at foreigner aid workers in Somaliland. These attacks were not only intended to keep foreigners away from the country, the intension was also to deny Somaliland the ability to recover and establish working relationships with foreign countries and organizations. Somaliland has since taken significant steps to bolster its internal security.
However the threats to Somaliland democracy are not all foreign manufactured. Our people recognize that one of the biggest threats to the country is coming from within in the form of outdated laws and presidential decrees that threaten to derail the democratic process.
One of the reasons for the creation of this radio is to educate the people about their rights and democracy in general. Radio Horyaal also promotes equality and justice among the different ethnic communities in Somaliland by encouraging proper representation of the minority and women in the government. Much of the current generation in Somaliland have no previous experience of exercising their rights choosing the right candidates in an election and so the Radio, during the short period since its creation, has proven that its programs had the intended effect on the community specially during the recent parliamentary elections.
In our programs we cover the right of the citizen to peacefully speak out against bad practices, corruption and the other forms of abuse of power.
